On a lonely island
Surrounded by turquoise waters
In the middle of the peaceful sea,
I explored the inland trails
Under a bright blue sky.

The midday sun
Beat upon my skin.
Little vegetation
Covered the desert island
And offered no shade.

I squinted into the sun’s bright rays.
Off in the distance,
I noticed a herd
Of wild horses
Grazing on the dry earth.

I caught a glimpse of
A dark chocolate stallion
With four white socks
Above his hooves,
Approaching me.

He left the herd
And walked closer and closer.
He greeted me with
A friendly flick of his tail
And a cheerful nicker

I reached out to him
And gently stroked his muzzle,
His hair as soft as silk.
I felt his warm breath
On my palm.

A distant neigh made him turn his head
To look at his departing herd
Leaving this area in search of more food.
He looked back at me,
His dark brown eyes filled with sorrow.

I wished for him
To stay for only a moment,
But I knew he must not
Lose his herd.
I thought of a name to remember him.

The snowy mark on his mane reminded me
Of a flash of light in the middle of a
stormy night.
I said, “Goodbye, Lightning,”
As he trotted off to join his herd.
I watched until the horses disappeared
on the horizon.
