Diversity is an important issue in school district 196 and VMSS. Staff and administrators are working to connect different cultures within the student body and school environment. But what changes are really being made?

Dr. Buchwald recently stated that VMSS was trying to incorporate lots of different students´ cultures into the curriculum. She said, “By teaching in this new format, it would be a fun way for students to learn more about their classmates´ backgrounds.”

So students know what changes will happen to Valley in the future, but how about in the present? What do the parents think? Well, at a meeting for parents, when asked what they would like to improve within our schools, many answers shared one keyword: “culture”. One current Valley Middle parent, Warda Hassan, explained, ¨If we teach our children all the different backgrounds and how to respect them, we might be able to create the first non-prejudiced generation¨

Readers have probably noticed that this is all student-based. But what does the student have to say? When Mrs. Soderlund’s second hour class got asked, they said that,“ Our school is very diverse but has a lack of diversity awareness.¨ Mrs. Soderlund specifically said, “Most schools, including ours, focus more on the outside of the group instead of digging deeper and developing a better understanding of the groups within.”

So what does the district think about diversity? Well according to Carita Green, a culture family advocate for the district, “We are teaching our staff about cultural proficiency so we can make those uncomfortable conversations more comfortable.”

Diversity in schools is currently acceptable in the district, but they still have a long way go in the long run. If administrators and teachers stick to a well thought out plan, VMSS can be an environment where everybody feels comfortable.
