As most sports fans already know, the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers tied 29-29 on September 16th. In the past 5 years, the NFL teams have only tied five games. I think the NFL should get rid of ties completely. I think with a few simple rule changes, the NFL could easily get rid of ties altogether

As the current overtime rule reads, each team gets a chance to possess the football unless the team that starts with the ball scores a touchdown, or if the defensive team gets a safety, pick 6, or a fumble returned for a touchdown. If the team that starts on defense gets the ball, then any form of points scored for either team ends the game. If the teams are still tied after the ten minute extra period, the game ends in a tie.

I have two ideas for how the NFL could get rid of ties. The first idea is the NFL could have overtime like how the NHL does. You have a ten minute period and if both teams are still tied after the extra time, both teams could have a kick off, like how in the NHL they have shootouts. In the kick off, both teams would start off by kicking 25-yard field goal. If both teams make the field goal, they would keep going back 5-10 yards per attempt. If one team misses one of the kicks and the other team makes it, that team would win. Adding this rule would add value to the kicker position, which is often overlooked.

Fans don’t like ties. They want to see high-action games.”

The second idea that I have is simply the same exact rules of the current overtime, but don’t have a timer. I think it’s ridiculous that in the playoffs they have overtime at all. It’s not like we can have ties in playoff games. So just get rid of the timer in overtime. Fans don’t like ties. They want to see high- action games. The duel between Cousins and Rodgers was amazing, and no one wanted to see it end in a tie.

The Packers play the Patriots in week 9 this year at the battle of the GOATs. No one wants to see it end in a tie. Fans want to see Tom Brady throw a sixty yard touchdown to win the game. Tied games don’t happen very often, but when they do, it just doesn’t seem right for some reason.

I really like these ideas. It does seem pointless to end in a tie.

I agreee, ties should not be a thing, if needs be, extend the game till somebody gets a point for their team, like a field goal or touchdown. Having a tie is basically saying both of the teams wasted their time playing for something that does not benefit them whatsoever in the long run…

I agree with this article. The Vikings-Packers game was so disappointing.

Even though I’m a hockey fan I can totally understand your frustration and disappointment when seeing a game end in a tie. Great article about why they should change the rules.

I was super pleased with the opinionated parts of this article. Obviously you used facts, but you used your thoughts on the topic as a main factor and a lot of opinionated articles don’t so that enough. Good job Garrett!
