Togo and my personal journey

Togo is a country in West Africa with an estimated population of approximately 7.9 million.  The capital of Togo is Lomé.  Togo is one of the smallest countries in Africa,  which has for president Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.  Togo is small but wonderful. In Togo we produce Cacao. Many people are not so rich, others are really short of money and others are really wealthy.  Togo is a country filled with pretty really pretty beaches.  Togo gained independence on April 27, 1960, which turns out to be my birthday.

Togo is teeming with several pretty places like “Lake Togo”, one of the most visited lakes in Togo, after the beaches.  There is a water park called “Olodge” which is also one of the coolest places but if you are looking for calm believe  me don’t go to “Olodge”. Instead I strongly recommend “Kpalimé waterfall’’ in ‘‘Kpalimé’’. One of the most peaceful places you will ever find and it is so pretty that I do not even have the words to describe this place.  This is one of my favorite places in TOGO, every year my Dad would take me to visit this wonderful place and we’ll sit down for hours just listening to nature.

In my Togo we speak 3 languages: French and Ewe (native language)and English.

I’ve been living here in Minnesota for about 1 year and half.

I started school here at Valley Middle School and it was a very big change. I didn’t know anyone.  Back in Togo, I used to be the popular kind because I really like to talk a lot and I give good advice and plus the only languages was French and Ewe which were the only languages I knew back then.

Over time after moving to Valley Middle School, I noticed that the students, teachers and all the staff liked French. According to a study in the France diplomatic website  on knowing a lot of languages, I learned that being an English speaker and also a French speaker (bilingual) opens possibilities of jobs abroad.  But being bilingual also has disadvantages. It can be confusing. That moment you realize you are speaking two languages at the same time. However, apart from that there are not really disadvantages of being bilingual.

French is an easy language to learn. There are many methods that make learning French enjoyable for children and adults. (Did you know ,France is the world’s top tourist destination and attracts more than 87 million visitors a year). The ability to speak even a little French makes it so much more enjoyable to visit Paris and all the regions of France.
