Greek Mythology 101 IV

Chapter Four: Poseidon

Greek+Mythology+101+IV

This chapter will be about Poseidon, the god of the sea, storms, horses, and earthquakes. He is also one of Zeus’s brothers. It was said that Poseidon supported the Greeks during the Greek and Troy war. I hope you will enjoy this new chapter of Greek Mythology 101!

As it was said earlier in the first paragraph,Poseidon is a brother of Zeus and a child of Cronus, but in some variations Poseidon did not get eaten like his siblings and was saved. Poseidon was worshiped in many different cities including Athens, Corinth, and cities in Magna Graecia.

When Athena became the patron goddess of Athens from a competition, the competition was to see which gift Athenians would choose. Poseidon offered salty sea water, which had no use for the Athenians, while Athena offered an olive tree which provided food and oil.  Athena won the bet and made Poseidon angry, which caused him to flood Athens, giving them sea power in later wars and battles.

There are many stories about Poseidon which are short enough to fit two stories in one paragraph. Like the previous story about Athena, Poseidon got into a clash with Helios that was resolved with the help of a Hecatoncheires (a beast with fifty heads and a hundred arms). The next story is how Apollo and Poseidon made Zeus mad and got sent to Troy to help build the wall that surrounded it. To get their revenge, Poseidon sent a sea monster to attack Troy but was killed by Heracles.

Poseidon had a very diverse love life, he has had different lovers, children, and partners. His first consort/partner was a sea nymph named Amphitrite, who was an ancient sea goddess. When Poseidon seeked to marry her, she ran away. Unfortunately, her dolphin tattled her whereabouts to Poseidon and was forced to marry him. They then had a kid named Triton. Poseidon then rescued a princess and had another child with her. Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman on an island, and had 5 sets of twins with her. Poseidon was also the reason that Medusa was turned into a monster, but we’ll cover that in a different story.

That was chapter four of this series.! It was a little short because there weren’t many stories about him. But I still hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll see you next time!
