Book battle comes to Valley

In case you haven’t heard, the library is hosting a reading contest for students here at Valley Middle School called Battle of the Books. There are 4-6 students per team. Each team is assigned to read 30 books. Teams can divide the books in any way amongst themselves. Not everyone is required to read all 30 books, but the goal should be to read as many books as possible.

There will be tournaments to test teams’ knowledge of the assigned books. The tournaments will be held on Wednesday April 25th and one week later on May 2nd. At the first tournament in April, all of the Valley teams will compete against each other. At the second tournament, however, the teams from Scott Highlands will arrive to compete against Valley teams.

Of course, there are prizes to be won. To win those prizes, teams will have to do well in the tournament, wear a team costume, have an exceptional team poster, complemented by a great attitude with lots of team spirit.

Although Mrs. Martin did not pick out the books by herself, her favorite is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Mrs. Martin loved reading as a kid, and she hopes that this competition will inspire more children to read. She started this competition at Valley after Scott Highlands Middle School requested that VMSS compete.

There are five Valley teams competing with a total of 26 students. The Eagle’s Call wishes them luck!
